Proposition 65

What is Proposition 65?

California Proposition 65, officially known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, is a law designed to help protect California residents by providing information about potential exposure to chemicals that are known to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm.

The law requires businesses operating in California or selling products to California customers to provide clear warnings when their products may contain chemicals listed under Proposition 65. These chemicals may be found in everyday products, household items, workplaces, or may be released into the environment.

Proposition 65 also prohibits businesses from knowingly releasing significant amounts of listed chemicals into sources of drinking water.

Proposition 65 Chemical List

The State of California maintains a list of chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. This list is updated regularly and currently includes approximately 900 chemicals. Businesses use this list to determine whether a warning may be required for their products.
